  • 8/07 - RYLA - A note from one of our YRYLA participants, Mimi:
    • "Thank you so much for scholarshiping me to attend YRYLA and giving me this opportunity. It was such an amazing and life changing experience and I am so grateful to take part in it.
My favorite parts were making new life-long friends and feeling a part of something important. I loved learning about the stereo types we make about people and why and how to change those mentally. That impacted me because I am now able to see people for who they are and not what they are. I also loved seeing all of the people going through some of the same challenges that I am experiencing and learning that I am never truly alone. Because of YRYLA I know that I am able to make an impact however I choose.
Now and in the future I will be use the tools that RYLA has given me to use leadership. I found that I express my leadership qualities through acting as a peacemaker, as a humanitarian and as a role model as someone who is compassionate, and motivated to make a difference and as someone who doesn't give up, when a challenge is presented."

  • 8/14 - ShelterBox - seeking to "unchange" lives impacted by disasters
    • Dave Addor shared some updates about ShelterBox.
    • Since 2000, ShelterBox has grown from one small club's adopted project to the largest Rotary club project in 100+ years of history.
    • ShelterBox aid is tailored to each disaster.  One shift over the past years has been to break out the "box" into the targeted needs for a specific area.  This has led to reduced costs and the ability to have each box help 4-5 families now (instead of just 1).
    • Dave brought a ShelterBox, LuminAid Solar Light, and examples of the water purification for display at our meeting.
    • Dave has offered to setup a ShelterBox tent at any of our functions.  We expressed an interest in having one at next year's Wine Fest at the end of July.
    • We are proud to provide continued support to this organization through our annual budget.
      • Should we now commit to being a "ShelterBox Hero"?
      • Bronze Hero's commit to making an ongoing impact by contributing $1000 per year for 3 years.

  • 8/21 - Breckenridge Film Festival
    • Speaker:  Janice Miller.  Event:  September 20-23, 2018.  Website:  https://www.breckfilmfest.org/
    • Over 60 films selected with 45 filmmakers planning to attend...  Including:  "A Drawing" (animation), "Shake Sister Shake" (documentary), "I Got You Babe" (short drama), "North of Nightfall" (adventure), and "The Inconsiderate Houseguest" (short comedy).
    • As you can see, there will be quite a variety of films, and new for 2018 - Music Videos!
    • Janice showed us the trailer for a very exciting documentary called "Love, Gilda".  Check out the trailer!
    • One popular film every year for our local community is the Adventure Reel.  This year's film will be "Andy Irons, Kissed by God" in partnership with Teton Gravity Research.  See the trailer here...  This film is about bipolar disorder and opioid addiction as seen through the life of three-time world champion surfer Andy Irons. Andy struggled with the same demons that millions of people worldwide battle with daily.
    • Don't miss all of the amazing events associated with this festival - films, parties, awards, free forums, children's program, special guest speakers, etc....  Keep an eye on the website for more info!
    • BFF also introduced the Summit Film Society this year, presented at Backstage Theatre the 2nd Tuesday of each month.  "We will be screening a variety of content not previously viewed in our mountainous community. Several guest appearances throughout the year allow the filmmaker to discuss their work in depth and mingle with the audience."

  • 8/28 - Summit County Community Dinner
    • 135,000 Free Meals and Counting...  "There is Enough!!"
    • What an inspiring presentation!  Deb, thanks so much for sharing your incredible passion and energy with our club on this topic!!  Here are some notes on what I took away from today...
    • This Community Dinner involved hundreds of amazing volunteers who have donated over 7,000 hours this past year to help keep this "well-oiled machine" running.  There are incredible partnerships throughout the community, especially with the Summit County Elks who have been instrumental in providing a location, storage, and helping to keep this open to everyone in our community throughout the years.
    • Every meal provides a balanced diet for the guests - Vegetables, Salad, Starch, Dessert, Meat, Milk & Juice.  There are more donations available at the door for people to take home as needed to continue to support their families.
    • Everyone is welcome, and there is enough to feed them all.  There is enough Food, Energy, Passion, and Volunteers to keep this program going, and more volunteers are always welcome!

Look for September Speaker Notes on our website, too!  We'll be hearing from the Pre-Collegiate Mentoring Program, Ballot Initiative 1A - Summit's Future, and Summit Safe Passages.
